Este fue mi primer intento de acuarela, pero también una、自动 learning session about how little I knew about water, pigment and patience.
Instead de copiar una imagen, sketched the jar from the place where I had placed it. EstoCarnaval helped me understand the proportions, aunque dejé demasiado espacio alrededor del objeto. When I saw the drawing, the bouquet appeared small and the tabletop enormous; correcting the proportions consumed almost twenty minutes.
To avoid the page curling, secured it with masking tape. That decision improved the surface, but the tape fixed my composition too rigidly and me hizo sentir que cualquier error resultaría definitivo. Before painting, conviene definir cuánto espacio estoy dispuesto a sacrificar: gran parte de mi Legendary frustration with watercolor came from wanting to preserve a perfect drawing.
Had tested the mixture on the palette, would have discovered that its consistency resembled diluted juice instead of watercolor.
Eso produced lines of different thickness, but gave the bouquet a slightly nervous appearance.
This taught me that watercolor needs room: when the surface is very wet, neighboring colors invade each other.
After allowing the paper to dry, I changed the technique. I applied a light wash to the flowers and left the white of the paper to suggest their highlights. The result was more controlled, though I also learned that waiting can feel strangely unproductive when the image does not advance quickly.
When I stepped away from the table and returned a few minutes later, the painting looked simpler. The dark areas had formed soft transitions, and the central flower had gained depth without receiving as many layers as I had imagined. Distance helped me see the composition rather than each individual mistake.
That new vision also brought another memory. I had recently visited an esculturas al aire libre exhibition, where the volume of the pieces stood out more than their details. I remembered that lesson while observing my little bouquet: the jar and the largest flower mattered more than the tiny leaves.
These habits did not turn my first attempt into a masterpiece, but they changed the way I saw the materials. The brush became a tool for placing water and color, not simply for drawing. I also learned to judge errors with more patience, since many of them become part of the final image.
My watercolor does not hang in a place where visitors will admire its precision. It hangs in my workspace, accompanied by the notes from that afternoon. Looking at it now, I recognize the overworked background, the pale flowers and the stems that seem to grow in different directions; I would not erase any of them.
